This is the latest project from their award- winning Kawaza Village School Fund, which also saw the recent completion of a small two- bedroomed house for volunteer teachers. Kawaza Village is situated in the rural area of Chief Nsefu, on the fringes of South Luangwa National Park, and is home to some of the 35,000- strong Kunda tribe. It was this community that Brenda Edwards ( aged 50) joined when she became the first volunteer teacher at Kawaza Village school. Brenda taught English, mathematics and social studies, while cheering on the children at school netball and football competitions. Meanwhile she lived life the Zambian way, learning local customs and some of the local Kundu language, attending church on Sundays with fellow teachers ( where she was asked to give a small talk about herself and her background) and making friends among the other villagers. She was moved to tears when the school marked her departure with a wonderful going- away party, complete with decorations, singing, dancing and a gift presented by the teachers. More teachers have since enjoyed a similarly rewarding experience, taking home memories that will last a lifetime. Volunteers at Kawaza stay for one week or more and activities are dependent on previous experience. A rate of US$ 10 per person per night covers a furnished house, food, housekeeping and a bicycle for exploring the area. Robin Pope Safaris founded the Kawaza School Fund in 1988 in an effort to improve conditions at Kawaza Basic School. It now works with four schools in the Nsefu area.
