The competition – open to all amateur and professional artists over 17 – comes with a top prize of £ 10,000, with the overall runner- up receiving £ 1,000 and a personal art class with wildlife artist and conservationist, David Shepherd CBE. In addition, all short- listed entries will be exhibited at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London next summer. " Winning was a complete and delightful surprise," says 2008 winner Richard Childs. " I'm really proud to have been part of a competition that not only encourages entries from such a range of disciplines but that also helps to raise awareness and funds to save endangered wildlife." Profits from the exhibition and the sale of artwork go to support DSWF projects in Africa and Asia working to protect some of the planet's most endangered animals. " There are thousands of artists all over the world who feel as passionately as I do about what man is doing to tigers, rhinos, elephants and all the other endangered mammals we are driving to extinction," adds David Shepherd. " Wildlife Artist of the Year gives us all the perfect opportunity to do something about it." The closing date for entries is 30 January 2009.
