This remarkable region covers 186,000 square kilometres inland from the Great Dividing Range across to the Northern Territory border. The eastern frame is the temperateTropicalTablelands,south touches the Isa interior,west borders the NorthernTerritory and north are the watery expanses of the Gulf of Carpentaria and theArafura Sea. This region covers 2,447 square kilometres from Simpson Point just north of Ellis Beach,west to the bottom of the Rex Range,north to the Bloomfield River and includes the LowIsles and Snapper Island. The Cairns Highlands covers an area of some 65,000 square kilometres (an area greater than the state ofTasmania) stretching from the eastern foothills of the Bellenden Kerr Range, to Mount Carbine in the north,Mount Garnet in the south and Chillagoe to thewest. The Highlands sit between the coastal Bellenden Kerr Range and the Great Dividing Range. Along the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef coastline are sand cays and continental islands that are accessed by air and sea. Popular spots to stay are Fitzroy Island,Green Island,Bedara Island,Dunk Island, Lizard Island,Double Island,Hinchinbrook Island,Orpheus Island and the Thursday Island group including Poruma Island.
