Two cubs, Marina and Sarnia, had been abandoned outside an apartment block in Bucharest. Critically ill, the lions were taken to the GSPCA Animal Shelter in Guernsey for rehabilitation in preparation for the fl ight to Africa. The third animal, a six- year- old French circus lion, had spent four years caged and hidden from view. Its terrible condition alerted French animal welfare groups SPA and FAA who co- ordinated arrangements for its release with Born Free Foundation. Born Free oversaw the tricky shipment to South Africa aboard a Kenya Airways Boeing 777, as they made the fi nal journey to Shamwari Private Game Reserve. BORN FREE SAVES AGAIN! msafi ri KENYA AIRWAYS has moved a lifesize baby elephant sculpture from the UK to Nairobi, with Virginia McKenna OBE, in a groundbreaking school arts project to highlight the need to protect Kenya’s elephant population. The special cargo was transported to Ol Moti School, near the Amboseli, where the children were to paint it in their own design. The sculpture will then be returned to Norwich to be exhibited as part of the GoElephants event. On departure from the UK Virginia McKenna said: “ The elephant is a fascinating animal that is a constant presence in many of these children’s lives, so this opportunity, sponsored by Land Rover and Kenya Airways, is a wonderful way to ignite their artistic talents. This amazing project will enable the children to paint and have fun, whilst working on a theme about human and animal confl ict, which, for them, is often a reality.” Budhist monks in Bangkok NEW Kenya Airways’ fl eet was boosted at the beginning of August with the arrival of a new B737- 800 aircraft from Boeing. With a range of approximately 5,600 km, the B737 has been a mainstay on many of our regional routes, enabling us to offer passengers a pan- African network. The new plane was due to be commissioned into service in mid- August. FLYING ELEPHANT

False KEEP HYDRATED CERTIFIED TO SATISFY Kenya Airports Authority ( KAA) has been awarded the International Standard Organization ( ISO) 9001: 2000 Certification by SGS International, the first Aviation Authority in Africa to do so. ISO 9001: 2000 is an internationally recognised quality management system, which according to industry expert George Ogoti “ specifies the type of quality resources and processes an organisation should have in order to achieve its set goals”. Put simply, the certification gives organisations an added advantage in the cut- throat world of international business. Some firms will simply not do business with a non- ISO compliant company. KAA’s Managing Director George Muhoho says clients are now assured of quality services, improved performance and customer satisfaction following the rigorous certification process carried out by International audit firm SGS. “ The ultimate benefits of the ISO certification are enhanced customer satisfaction, reduced operating costs, increased competitiveness, performance and profitability, as well as the improved transfer of knowledge within the organization and increased employee morale and motivation.” 150 msafiri SAFARI NJEMA Loving and treating yourself well everyday is the secret to a healthier and brilliant you. Think of your body as you would your favourite houseplant. If you do not give it the right amount of water everyday and treat it with deserving care and attention, it is bound to wither, irrespective of how nourishing the soil in which it sits. Over 65% of our bodies is water, but for some reason, we do not take the necessary measures to ensure that our internal water balance remains optimal. Adequate hydration helps the body’s organs to operate as they should. For example, did you know that your brain needs a minimum of two glasses of plain water per day to function? From helping our bodies transport nutrients to aiding us in digestion; from facilitating the absorption of nutrients ( especially water- soluble vitamins) to keeping our circulation at its best, and ( most importantly) helping us get rid of all the toxins we do not need in our system, one can only marvel at how useful water is to everyday living. Water is life. How then do we meet our water requirements, especially when flying? We tend to rely on plain water or beverages, which contain more than 90% water. We also get some fluids from solid foods such as fruits and vegetables. Grains and meat products, though, do not contribute significantly to water intake. Did you know it is estimated that your body can lose up to 4.4 litres of water during a three-hour flight? When on a long haul flight, remember that water is the best thirst- quencher, although other liquids such as juices, milk and teas can also help meet fluid needs. Drinking water on board, however, can be a challenge, especially if all you want to do is relax, enjoy a good nap and reduce the number of trips to the bathroom! Think of the upside though. The best way to combat jet lag is to keep drinking water. WATER FLYING AND YOU! Wanjiku Wairia is the Chief Executive of Optimal Nutricare, consultants specialising in optimising health through nutrition support n Drink a litre of water before check in. This wil save you the drama of trying to down your water at the security check. n As you wait for your flight, drink another litre of water. By this time, you wil have taken care of half of your water requirements for a longhaul flight. n As the flight attendants ensure you are strapped in, ask for a bottle of water. They are always happy to get you one. n Upon arrival, if you haven’t already, take the final bottle of water and you’re now ready to face the day at your new destination!
