Kodiak Island [B, L, D (days 2 & 3 only)] Depart London for Vancouver where you spend the night at the Fairmont Airport Hotel before flying to Kodiak Island, the largest island in the Gulf of Alaska. This picturesque wilderness is rich with an abundance of Brown Bears, Sea Otters, whales, seals and sealions. Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge was established to preserve and protect the pristine habitat of the magnificent Brown Bear. It is also an important staging area for seabirds and wintering wildfowl whose combined populations number well over a million. Your visit here will take in the best of these areas staying at the Buskin River Inn. Kayaking and bear-viewing by air are also on offer. Days 4 to 7. Katmai National Park [B, L, D] Today you continue by float plane to Kukak Bay where you board your boat. Accommodation is provided for six guests in three cabins with upper and lower bunks. Bathroom facilities are shared. Explore Hallo Bay and the coastal waters of Katmai on the lookout for bears feeding for salmon and sedge grass, and digging for clams. At this time of year the bears are mating and cubs are seen for the first time. Return to Kodiak and Buskin River Inn in the evening of Day 7. Days 8 & 9. Anchorage [B] Fly back to Anchorage for a final night at the Copper Whale Inn before catching your homeward flight. Day 10. Arrive home Wolves of Yellowstone 8 days London to London Day 1. Jackson Hole, Wyoming [D] Depart London for Jackson Hole where on arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Jackson is situated on the edge of Grand Teton National Park and is surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes. In winter, the snowy peaks become especially breathtaking. In the evening enjoy a meal with a local naturalist and learn about the wildlife of this region. Day 2. Wildlife-viewing [B, L, D] Big Horn Sheep, Bald, and Golden Eagles, Mule Deer, Bison, Moose and Coyotes are all on the agenda for today, this area being especially rich in wildlife during the winter. After lunch and a tour of the National Museum of Wildlife Art, travel onto the National Moose Refuge by horse-drawn sleigh. In the late afternoon, you travel to the Hatchet Resort, a typical western motel, located at the northern reaches of the Grand Teton National Park. Day 3. Yellowstone National Park [B, L, D] Begin the day exploring Buffalo Valley and the northern portion of Grand Teton National Park en-route to Flagg Ranch. After lunch, an enclosed, heated private snowcoach transports you into the magic of a Yellowstone winter. Otters, Bald Eagles, Moose and herds of Bison may be seen. Your accommodation for the night is at the secluded Old Faithful Snow Lodge, named after the nearby famous geyser, Old Faithful. Days 4 & 5. Lamar Valley [B, L, D] This morning explore the Upper Geyser Basin and snowshoe in the Old Faithful area, if time and weather permit. Continue northwards towards Mammoth Hot Springs. En-route, experience several different geothermal areas, with Bison and Moose wintering in the interior of the park, and spectacular winter scenery. Explore Mammoth Hot Springs, named after steaming limestone terraces, before continuing on through the Lamar Valley, which will be your first opportunity to view Wolves. Your base for two nights is the Alpine Inn in Cooke City, Montana. This wonderful rustic western lodge is located along the Beartooth Highway - one of the most scenic roadways in America! The Lamar Valley is perhaps the best spot in North America to view Grey Wolves having been re-introduced into Yellowstone in the 1990’s amid much controversy. The end result has been tremendously successful and the animals are now breeding and thriving. Your Wolf exploration entails looking for various signs of Wolves as you drive along the road, stopping to view and photograph wildlife. At times you may see or hear single Wolves as they comb the valley floor in search of food. Or, if you are lucky, you may see an entire pack as they relentlessly hunt their prey. Day 6. Bozeman, Montana [B, L, D] A further search for Wolves may be possible early this morning, before you head back to Mammoth Hot Springs and on to Bozeman, Montana where you spend your last night. You may also have time for other winter activities (such as snow shoeing) on your way out of the park. Day 7. Homeward [B] Today you fly back home from Bozeman. Day 8. Depart London Depart for Halifax, Nova Scotia where you pick-up your vehicle and drive to Truro and your first view of the spectacular Bay of Fundy. The long straight sides of the bay mark a highway ‘corridor’ for migrating birds on the Atlantic coast and its huge tidal movements bring a rich larder of food for summering whales. Overnight at Foley House. Days 2 to 5. Cape Breton Island [B (Day 2 only)] Cape Breton Island in the Gulf of St Lawrence is your next stop (approximately 266 kilometres). The island boasts the highest density of Bald Eagles in eastern North America, and you should be on the lookout here for Moose also. Whale-watching in the Gulf may produce Pilot, Fin, Humpback, and Minke Whales, as well as White-sided Dolphins, Harbour Porpoise and both Grey, and Harbour Seals. Spend one night at Telegraph House in Baddeck and three nights at Laurie’s Motor Inn in Cheticamp (approximately 206 kilometres apart). Day 6. Prince Edward Island A drive along the spectacular Cabot Trail with its winding cliff-side views takes you off Cape Breton and ultimately on to Prince Edward Island via a short ferry ride across Northumberland Strait (approximately 300 kilometres.) Spend a night at Lakeview Inn in New Perth. Days 7 & 8. Fundy National Park [B] A shortish drive (approximately 292 kilometres) over Prince Edward Island and across one of the longest bridge’s in the world (Confederation Bridge) brings you to New Brunswick’s wonderfully varied habitats - wide sandy beaches, tidal marshes, steep cliffs and a moist coastal forest of spruce and fir. You should see a host of waders, warblers and numerous raptors including a healthy population of Osprey. Visit Hopewell Rocks (strange rock formations shaped by the highest tides in the world) and Cape Enrage, with its lighthouse and lighthouse keeper’s cottage (where you can have tea) and 400 million year old forest preserved in stone. Comfortable accommodation is provided at Florentine Manor for two nights. Days 9 to 12. Grand Manan [B] Heading west along the coastal road you travel by ferry to Grand Manan, made famous by John James Audubon who frequented the island (approximately 247 kilometres) Your ferry journey may provide sightings of Atlantic Puffin, Greater, and Sooty Shearwater, Northern Gannet and Black-legged Kittiwake. There will be plenty of time to explore the island’s spectacular basalt cliffline (home to numerous species of nesting seabirds) and with a further full day’s whale-watching you may see the endangered Northern Right Whale. A visit to the Grand Manan Museum is also recommended as is a visit to White Head Island. (A free ferry shuttles cars and passengers between Grand Manan and White Head Island on a regular basis.) There are isolated beaches to explore, together with quaint wooden houses and wonderful scenery to admire. You spend four nights at Shorecrest Lodge. Day 13. Digby [B] Return to the mainland by ferry (approximately 74 kilometres) perhaps spotting Fin, and Minke Whales as you go. Spend your final night at the Ocean Hillside Inn in Digby. Days 14 & 15. Homeward [B (Day 14 only)] Drive over the central hills of peninsula Nova Scotia to Halifax, in time to return your hire car and board your flight to the UK, where you arrive the next day. Wild Newfoundland 9 days London to London Days 1 & 2. Depart London [B & L (Day 2 only)] Depart London for St. John’s in Newfoundland. You will be met on arrival and transferred to the Quality Hotel, where you will be based for two nights. On Day 2 spend the morning whale-watching on the look out for Humpback, Minke, and Fin Whales as well as dolphins, porpoises and numerous seabirds. Day 3. Avalon [B, L] Caribou, puffins and seals are on the agenda today. This evening you overnight at Bird Island Resort in St. Brides. Days 4 & 5. Terra Nova National Park [B, L] Visit the continent’s third largest gannet colony, which is also a breeding site for Thick-billed, and Razor-billed Auks, Common, and Brunich’s Guillemot and other seabirds. Land-based whale-watching is on offer in season (July). Continue to Terra Nova National Park for a 2-night stay at Clode Sound Motel. Moose, Black Bear and Osprey may all be seen, with activities on offer including hiking, birdwatching, beachcombing, seakayaking and another boat trip to look for whales, eagles, terns and icebergs.
