Depart London Depart London for Belize City, travelling via America where you spend the night at an airport hotel. Arrive in Belize City early afternoon on Day 2. Here you will be met and transferred to the Radisson Fort George Hotel for a 1-night stay. Day 3. Crooked Tree [B] En-route to Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary visit the Mayan ruins at Altun Ha which in its day was an important trading town. In the dry season between November and May, the rivers, swamps and lagoons of Crooked Tree are awash with herons, ducks, kites, egrets and kingfishers, as well as Black Howler Monkey, Morelet’s Crocodile and a selection of other reptiles. Spend the night at, Birds Eye View Lodge. Days 4 to 6. San Ignacio [B] Enroute to San Ignacio take a guided tour of Xunantunich. This is an area of rich, unspoilt mountain country dotted with waterfalls and filled with exotic flora and fauna. In this beautiful forested riverbank setting you may enjoy wilderness walks, canoeing, rafting, horseriding and birdwatching. You will see the spectacular Mountain Pine Ridge, Thousand Foot Falls, Rio Frio Caves and the Mayan ruins at Caracol. Spend three nights at the San Ignacio Hotel. Days 7 & 8. Tikal, Guatemala [B, L, D] Today you cross the border into Guatemala and the dramatic ancient city of Tikal. The ruins of Tikal include more than 3,000 structures extending over nine square kilometres, with the remnants of palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, ball courts, terraces, plazas, avenues and steam baths to be explored. Spend your days passing beneath the forest canopy to explore this abandoned hidden city where Howler, and Spider Monkeys, Swallow-tailed Kites and Ocellated Turkey are all possible sightings. Other residents include Jaguar, Ocelot and Puma. Spend two nights at Flores or Tikal Jungle Lodge. Tikal Jungle Lodge is only one kilometre from the Central Plaza of Tikal and consists of comfortable bungalow accommodation nestling in lush forest. Day 9. Windy Hill [B] There will be a final chance to explore Tikal this morning before crossing back into Belize and staying at Windy Hill Resorts for the night. Days 10 to 13. Ambergris Caye [B (Days 11 to 13 only)] Fly to San Pedro and the barrier reef today. In this fantastic marine environment you may snorkel and dive to see Eagle Rays, Nurse Sharks and colourful corals in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, or simply relax in the warm clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. On arrival in Huatulco, you will be met and transferred to Posada Rancho Cerro Largo. The lodge is comprised of five cabanas, each perched high on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Day 2. La Escobilla Turtle Camp [B, L, D] After breakfast you visit La Ventanilla estuarine ecosystem, a project run by the community of La Ventanilla, which is restoring the mangroves, a superb natural habitat for sea turtles, alligators and numerous birds. Later you travel to La Escobilla Turtle Camp to learn about their conservation programme. Day 3. Mazunte [B, L, D] Later this morning you visit Mazunte, the site of the National Mexican Turtle Centre. Here biologists and research groups work towards the protection and preservation of sea turtles. After lunch in Puerto Angel you have time to relax on the beach before returning to the lodge. This evening, return to La Escobilla Turtle Camp to continue with the observation of the amazing turtles and the conservation programme, helping patrol the beach, and if you are lucky, releasing hatchlings into the ocean. Day 4. Puerto Escondido [B, L, D] This morning you drive to the charming Mexican village of Puerto Escondido stopping en-route at an iguana rehabilitation centre. While in Puerto Escondido you stay at Hotel Santa Fe. This blissful spot on the Pacific coast offers the rare combination of comfortable accommodation with an unspoiled natural setting. In the afternoon transfer to Manialtepec Lagoon, a tranquil mangrove-lined lagoon with a rich diversity of wetland birdlife, including herons, ibises and egrets. Keep an eye open for more exotic species like Roseate Spoonbills, White-fronted Parrots and Tiger Herons. Day 5. Puerto Escondido [B, L, D] After an early breakfast enjoy a morning boat excursion to view sea turtles. An optional horse ride on the beach is also available. Days 6 & 7.
