Surama [B, L, D] After breakfast you transfer to the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway, a series of suspension bridges and decks high above the forest floor. Continue your journey onwards to the Amerindian village of Surama where you stay in comfortable guesthouse chalets. Here you may visit the local school, medical centre, church and some of the village houses. Dawn hikes, led by Surama guides across the savannah and up Surama Mountain conceal a multitude of birds and fantastic vistas, and evening walks reveal the mysteries of the forest after dark. The nearby Burro Burro river is a fantastic place to observe Giant River Otters, Tapir and Spider Monkeys. Days 8 & 9. Annai Landing [B, L, D] After breakfast you transfer to Rock View Lodge located where the savannah meets the forest-covered foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains. Karanambu Ranch [B, L, D] After breakfast you transfer to Karanambu Ranch, the home of Diane McTurk, widely known for her work in rehabilitating orphaned Giant River Otters. You can visit Simoni Pond for some of the best inland fishing in Guyana or explore the flooded forest or savannah. Trips can be made to nearby ponds for birdwatching and to view Victoria Amazonica – the world’s largest water lily and Guyana’s national flower. Explore the Rupununi River in search of wild Giant River Otters, Black Caiman and Arapaima (the world’s largest fresh water fish). Day 12. Yupukari [B, L, D] This morning you travel out into the savannah in search of Giant Anteaters. Heading up river by boat, and birdwatching along the way, the Amerindian village of Yupukari is your destination today. Stop along the way at Caiman House where there will be time to see an impressive collection of snakes and spiders. After dinner you can go out with researchers on the Rupununi River to look for Black Caiman. Overnight at Caiman House. Day 13. Depart London Depart for Lima where you spend the night at the Posada del Inca Miraflores. Days 2 to 4. Cuzco [B] Fly down to Cuzco, to the Posada del Inca Cuzco Hotel where you will be based for a 3-night stay. Located high in the Andes, Cuzco retains a wonderful mix of Inca and colonial architecture. Llamas are ever present but you may also see Andean Condor, Andean Lapwing, or Giant Coot flying overhead. Days 5 & 6. Machu Picchu [B] Board the train for the journey to the ‘lost city of Machu Picchu’ which stands on a high plateau flanked by Andean peaks. Spend one night at the Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel in Aguas Calientes, before returning to Machu Picchu early the following morning. Return to Cuzco in the afternoon, where you will stay a further night at the Posada del Inca Cuzco Hotel. Days 7 to 10. Puerto Maldonado [B, L, D] Transfer to the airport for a short flight to Puerto Maldonado from where you travel by motorised canoe to the Reserva Amazonica Lodge deep in the jungle for four nights. There are walking trails and boats which are available to cruise in and out of the lakes and lagoons, and you will have exceptional photographic opportunities.
