On arrival transfer to the small town of Apriltsi, adjacent to the Central Balkan National Park for a 4-night stay at the Tihiat hotel. Days 2 to 4. Bear hide [B, L, D] Bulgaria boasts one of the healthiest populations of Brown Bear in Europe, with around 700 bears roaming the mountains here. You have the option to spend the evenings in the hide or if you prefer, stay the whole night in the hide, as dawn can be an excellent time to see and photograph the bears in their natural environment. During the day explore the surrounding territory for bear tracks, learn about the biology of the bears and have the opportunity to discuss conservation issues with your guide. Other animals that you may see include Wild Boar, Red Deer, Roe Deer, as well as Golden Eagle and many woodland birds. Day 5. Homeward [B] Return to Sofia for your homeward flight. Depending on time there may be the opportunity for a city sightseeing tour. Bears & Wolves in Romania 4 days London to London Day 1 [D] Depart London for Bucharest. Here you will be collected by your guide and transferred over the Carpathian Mountains to Zarnesti, at the border of Kingstone Mountain National Park well known for its population of Wolves, Brown Bears and Lynx. During your four day stay you will be based at the traditional Elena Guesthouse. After dinner, you may get the chance to visit the bears, which are feeding in the outskirts of Brasov town. Day 2 [B,L,D] After breakfast you will begin your guided bear and wolf tracking in the woods en-route to the bear hide. Although there are said to be more bears in Romania than there are in the whole of British Columbia, they are elusive, but you can be assured of a good opportunity to view one or two feeding close to the hide. Other wildlife you may see includes Red Fox and very occasionally Wild Boar, Red Deer and Lynx. Birdlife here includes woodpeckers, grouse, Honey Buzzard, and various owl species. Day 3 [B,L,D] In the morning take a walk in the Zarnesti Gorges where it is possible to see birds like Wallcreepers, Alpine Swifts, Three-toed Woodpecker. After lunch you continue wolf and bear tracking in Kingstone Mountain National Park. Day 4 [B] On the way to Bucharest you have the option to visit one of the most famous medieval castles in this area which was built by the Teutonic Knights, Bran Castle. It was this castle that was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s classic novel ‘Dracula’. Nature in the Danube Delta 6 days London to London Day 1. Depart London [L, D] Depart London for Bucharest and on arrival transfer the 250 kilometres to Tulcea in the far east of Romania. Days 2 to 5. Danube Delta [B, L, D] During the next four days you will explore the Danube Delta by boat, land and on foot. Spread over 2,200 square kilometres, Romania's Danube Delta is teeming with natural life. A World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve, the Delta’s varied habitat is home to many species of birds, fish, fauna and flora. You explore the channels and crystal clear lakes of the Delta by boat hopefully seeing many of the species of birds to be found here including the largest colony of White Pelicans in Europe as well as Eurasian Spoonbills, cormorants, ibis, herons, egrets, and White-tailed Sea Eagle. The flora here is also amazing with many endemic species of trees and flowering plants There will also be the opportunity to explore some of Romania's culture with visits to villages, monasteries and vineyards and of course you can sample some of the delicious local cuisine. Depart London Depart London on the afternoon flight for Keflavik where you will be met and transferred to Hotel Klopp for a 2- night stay. Hotel Klopp is a good hotel in a central location within easy walking distance of the harbour and the many good restaurants and bars the Reykjavik has to offer. Day 2. Whale-watching [B] In the morning walk to the harbour for your first whalewatch excursion aboard one of two vessels. The first takes a maximum of 150 passengers, the second a maximum of 38. As soon as you leave the harbour you should expect to see marine life. The waters in the immediate vicinity are amongst the world’s prime locations for Humpback, Fin, Sei, and Minke Whales as well as Harbour Porpoises and White-beaked Dolphins. As well as whales, you may see a host of different seabirds and on your return, large numbers of nesting birds will be visible on Puffin Island. In the afternoon you have the option of taking a further whale-watching excursion, joining an escorted horseback trip into the surrounding volcanic countryside, or visiting the nearby geysers. Day 3. Homeward [B] This morning you have time for a final whale-watch excursion, before transferring to the airport for your homeward flight.
