A fantastic opportunity to float silently amongst the whales, watch in awe as bears feed on salmon and learn about the native communities in this most beautiful part of North America. Sailing on small boats, accommodating between 12 and 16 guests, these journeys offer a comfortable and relaxed way to view wildlife. Whales & Bears of South-east Alaska Alaska is a vast beautiful and truly wild place and you will experience this wilderness as few can ever do. Sailing on a 12-passenger motor vessel, you cruise through narrow tidal inlets to bays where towering glaciers calve into the ocean and sleeping seals drift past on icebergs, anchoring each night in a new secluded bay. Alaska is one of the few refuges left in North America for the Brown Bear. By midsummer, the salmon start to spawn up the many creeks and, from your raised viewing platform at Anan Creek, you may watch Black, and Brown Bears feeding – a classic wildlife sight. In Frederick Sound and Chatham Strait, Humpback Whales feed on tiny krill in the rich northern waters. To see these whales breach is one of the greatest spectacles in the wildlife world. For thousands of years, South-east Alaska has been home to the Tlingit, Tshimshian and Haida people and you will visit some of their communities along your route. Orcas, Totems & Grizzly Bears At the northern end of Vancouver Island, you will find a maze of islands and waterways full of wildlife, amazing scenery and the history and traditions of the Kwakwaka’wakw people. Each year, millions of salmon returning to spawn pass through Johnstone Strait, also considered a core Orca Whale location. With luck, you may see one of the large groups of Orcas that congregate in the Strait each summer. Sailing aboard your 20-metre ketch you will have excellent views of feeding Grey Whales in the shallow bays and Humpback Whales just offshore. The area is also good for Black Bears, usually spotted roaming the shore feeding on crabs. Only a few Kwakwaka’wakw villages remain inhabited, however the culture and traditions are intact. You will find proud totem poles still standing in the old villages whilst witnessing how the modern Kwakwaka’wakw in Alert Bay preserve their heritage in elaborate carvings, canoes and masks. One of few areas on the coast to see the Spirit Bear is Princess Royal Island. As only 10% of Black Bears in the area have the recessive gene giving it snow-white fur, you will need perseverance and some luck to spot one. The ‘Great Bear Rainforest’, as the area is now known, is also home to significant populations of the magnificent Black and Brown Bears, drawn to the estuaries of the large coastal rivers to feast on the abundant salmon moving up river to spawn. You spend a day with local Gitga’at native guides who will share their culture and history and lead you to their favourite bear-viewing sites. Your chances of seeing marine mammals on this trip are excellent too. Fitzhugh Sound and Whale Channel are good areas for Humpback Whales, whilst the coastline near Cape Caution supports a summer population of Grey Whales and the entire coast is renowned for its Orcas.
