Originally designed for the challenging ice conditions of northern Siberia, the ship was refurbished in 1992 and since that time has carried adventurous travellers to the remotest corners of the world. The icebreaker’s double-thickness armour-plated hull has high-tech polymer coatings and underwater air-bubbling systems designed to reduce friction to a minimum. The ship breaks through the ice by riding up onto the surface and crushing it with its massive weight. Powered by 24,000 horsepower engines, her advanced icebreaking technology takes passengers to places other ships fear to sail. No other expedition ship has navigated greater expanses of polar water. Nuclear-powered, steam turbines create a formidable 75,000 horsepower; combined with a thick armour of steel plate, Yamal is a model of icebreaker technology and more than capable of rising to the challenge of the heaviest ice. Yamal’s nuclear reactors are encased in 160 tons of steel, high density concrete and water. The system’s double vacuum stills produce five tons of fresh water per hour. The reactors direct steam to the two turbines, which in turn power six generators driving three massive propellers, with seven-ton blades. Yamal’s high efficiency propulsion system meets or exceeds all international environmental and safety standards. 214 F O R R E S E R V A T I O N S C A L L U S O N 0845 130 6982 Vessel Statistics Built Russia 1992 Length 150 metres Breadth 30 metres Draft 11.08 metres Cruising Speed 20 knots Passengers 100 Crew 150 Registered Russia Engines 2 nuclear powered steam turbines - 75,000 hp Class LL1 GRT 23,000 tons ICEBREAKER ICEBREAKER
