Originally designed for the challenging ice conditions of northern Siberia, the ship was refurbished in 1992 and since that time has carried adventurous travellers to the remotest corners of the world. The icebreaker’s double-thickness armour-plated hull has high-tech polymer coatings and underwater air-bubbling systems designed to reduce friction to a minimum. The ship breaks through the ice by riding up onto the surface and crushing it with its massive weight. Powered by 24,000 horsepower engines, her advanced icebreaking technology takes passengers to places other ships fear to sail. No other expedition ship has navigated greater expanses of polar water. Nuclear-powered, steam turbines create a formidable 75,000 horsepower; combined with a thick armour of steel plate, Yamal is a model of icebreaker technology and more than capable of rising to the challenge of the heaviest ice. Yamal’s nuclear reactors are encased in 160 tons of steel, high density concrete and water. The system’s double vacuum stills produce five tons of fresh water per hour. The reactors direct steam to the two turbines, which in turn power six generators driving three massive propellers, with seven-ton blades. In 1991, the present owners purchased the hull which they completely re-rigged and refitted. The Noorderlicht now has a well-balanced two-masted schooner rig and, with its qualified captain and experienced crew, is capable of sailing the seven seas. The Noorderlicht has accommodation for 20 travellers in comfortable twin cabins. All cabins have upper and lower berths, a cupboard and wash basin. The shared shower (four) and toilet (five) facilities are conveniently located. Instead of portholes, the cabins have frosted glass in the ceiling so the daylight can shine through. Whilst sailing, passengers are actively encouraged to participate in handling the sails, taking the helm, and being on night watch. She features eight double cabins, three heads with hot showers and a comfortable salon with a natural history library. On deck, the large deckhouse provides a comfortable spot to watch for wildlife. The Island Odyssey is large enough for comfort, privacy and safety and small enough to create a good rapport among passengers and crew.
