On arrival you transfer to Kirindy Forest where you spend the day exploring. Kirindy lies about 60 kilometres north of Morondava and is perhaps the best place to get to know nocturnal Malagasy wildlife. The wonderful Kirindy Forest is home to the diminutive Pygmy Mouse Lemur (which weighs a mere 35 grams), Fork-marked, Coquerel's Dwarf, Fat-tailed Dwarf, and Grey Mouse Lemur. In terms of reptile fauna, Kirindy is home to the gorgeous Labord's Chameleon and the huge Oustalet's Chameleon. Birding in Kirindy is good too with Coquerel's and Crested Couas, Sicklebill, and White-headed Vangas, Lesser, and Greater Vasa Parrots and a variety of raptors being regularly seen. You will be based at a basic lodge or will be camping within the park. Day 9. Morondava [B, D] After a morning in the park you return Morondava, visiting the ‘Avenue of Baobabs’ en-route. Others to see include Milne-Edwards Sifaka, Red-bellied, and Red-fronted Brown Lemur. On a nocturnal walk you may see Rufous Mouse Lemur and even Striped Civet. You spend two nights at the Setam Lodge. Days 7 & 8. Ranohira & Isalo National Park [B, D] Today you drive on to Ranohira via Fianarantsoa. The spectacular scenery and paddy fields are replaced by savannah as you drive down to the western plains and the picturesque Isalo National Park. A 2-night stop at the Relais de la Reine here gives you a day to visit the reserve with its endemic Dwarf Baobabs and aloes and a chance to spot Ring-tailed Lemur or Verreaux's Sifaka. Days 9 & 10. Ifaty [B, D] Continuing south-west you pass the dry forest of the Zombitse Reserve where you stop to look for the elusive Appert's Greenbul en-route to the beach at Ifaty where you spend two nights at the Le Paradisier. Be on the lookout for Sanfords Brown Lemur and the larger Crowned Lemur. Days 4 & 5. Ankarana [B, D] This morning you transfer by road to Ankarana where you spend two nights camping in Ankarana Special Reserve. Ankarana is formed from a massif of limestone some 80 kilometres long and 50 kilometres wide. This rocky outcrop has been eroded by subterranean rivers and rain forming a vast system of caves and canyons and producing razor sharp points called 'tsingy'. Around the massif is a dense dry deciduous forest which shelters large populations of Crowned Lemur, Sandford's Lemur, and the nocturnal Forked Marked Lemur, Grey Mouse Lemur, and Greater Dwarf Lemur. Birdlife is equally well represented with the rare Brown Mesite, and other more common species such as Crested Ibis, Crested Coua and Madagascar Harrier Hawk all resident. Your nights here will be spent under canvas, camping beside a cliff face and inside one of the forest canyons. The wildlife here shows no fear of humans, with troops of audacious lemurs and Ring-tailed Mongoose coming out to steal your food during camp meal times! Days 6 to 8.
