F O R R E S E R V A T I O N S C A L L U S O N 0845 130 6982 Livingstone, Victoria Falls 74 The Victoria Falls is an exceptional area and therefore worthy of special mention. It is an African crossroads, a meeting place of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Angola - and a beautiful one at that! During the dry season months of June to October there is barely any water tumbling over the towering rock face of the gorge, and from September to October you can walk across the rocks on the Zambian side to Livingstone Island and sit and wonder at the spectacle. During the green season from November to May it is a different story altogether - the water passes over the lip of the Falls in a terrifying, voracious, unsympathetic mass, plundering everything in its path. In and around the Falls area of course there are numerous things to do – Elephant-back riding, canoeing, birdwatching, botanising, boating, bungy-jumping, white-water rafting and of course flying over the Falls by light aircraft, helicopter and even micro-light! On these pages you will see some of our favourite hotels and lodges in the Victoria Falls area, they are all accessible by road, boat or air. It is by no means exhaustive, but you would be hard pushed to find a better collection! Tongabezi is a secluded riverside camp on a sweeping bend in the Zambezi, just fifteen kilometres from the Victoria Falls. It accommodates eighteen guests in five twin-bedded cottages, and four large luxury doublebed 'houses' - Honeymoon, Tree, Dog, and Bird House. All are en-suite and are only feet from the water with private views across the Zambezi. Built of local materials, every room is unique in design and set among the camp’s ebony and acacia trees. The Royal Livingstone Hotel This luxury hotel is without doubt the best placed to view the Falls. The hotel has been lovingly crafted from near virgin bushland and the attention to detail is exceptional. The rooms are all in two storey clusters and each has a private balcony or terrace with superb views of the river. There is a beautiful swimming pool, a sumptuous dining room, a lounge and a bar. The wooded grounds are a pleasure to stroll and birdwatch in, and there is a large wooden platform beneath a shady tree which projects over the Zambezi River. The River Club The River Club is situated eighteen kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls. It faces westward into the sunset and onto the Zambezi National Park on the opposite side of the river. Set among lush riverine vegetation the camp has a distinctly Edwardian flavour. The ten thatched chalets accommodate a maximum of twenty people. The rooms have en-suite facilities including a bath, shower, toilet and basin. Honeymoon suites are also available. The main house comprises the dining room, lounge and bar area. The swimming pool has a magnificent view over the river for those who wish to relax in the sun. Sindabezi On a totally secluded island in the stream of the Zambezi River is Sindabezi. The camp is a few kilometres downstream from its ‘sister’ lodge Tongabezi and is accessed only by boat. It consists of four individual thatched cottages each with en-suite facilities. The island is surrounded by Victoria Falls National Park and the wildlife is abundant. Lion and Hyena call most nights, there are large herds of Elephant in the area, a variety of antelope and a magnificent birdlife. Falls visits, picnic lunches, island walks, river trips and birdwatching are all part of the package! The Zambezi Sun Hotel The Zambezi Sun Hotel offers extremely comfortable accommodation on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, while being relatively simple and rustic. The hotel accommodates guests in airy rooms, decorated in a style reflecting Africa’s heritage. Each room has en-suite facilities, air-conditioning, satellite TV, safe, telephone and a balcony. The public areas include reception, lounge and bar areas, with a quality restaurant and swimming pool. Islands of Siankaba Lodge Islands of Siankaba Lodge is a forested retreat on two untouched islands amid the Zambezi River. It's six secluded chalets, each with unique views of the river, are linked by a foot bridge to the restaurant. Stylish and elegant, Siankaba blends in with a backdrop of natural forest creating a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors may spend quiet moments around the shaded pool or relax in the comfort of the open lounge and bar. 75 Africa / Victoria Falls |
