SEE US ON THE WEB ATwww. equineadventures. co. uk69 Across the Andes This superb expedition across the Andes is operated by Jane Williams of Estancia Huechahue, in conjunction with Loth and Pamela Kutler who own Turismo Maichin in Chile. Both companies are renowned for their superbly schooled and well looked after horses. The ride sets off from Estancia Huechahue in Argentina. From Huechahue you have four days hard riding, ascending the magnificent Andes Mountains to the border with Chile. You ford rivers, pass through Indian reservations and ride over ridges, through magnificent rocky gorges, gallop across water meadows and race along sandy tracks. Nights will be spent camping by streams and rivers under the spectacular stars of the Southern hemisphere. At the border you will switch horse and guides and head down through the spectacular beech forests, with magnificent views of lakes and volcanoes before finishing the ride at Panquie Hot Springs and transferring back by vehicle to Huechahue. This ride is only suitable for experienced riders, who are fit enough to canter for extended periods and spend long, sometimes arduous hours in the saddle. The terrain is steep and treacherous in places and you will need to dismount and lead your horse. This is a ride for those looking for an adventure, a true expedition into the Andes Mountains. The ride starts and finishes at Estancia Huechahue. Whilst on the expedition, a back- up vehicle supports the trip and accommodation is provided in two man tents, with good quality down sleeping bags and therm- o- rest mattresses. However, on one night the vehicle does not meet with the group and all the camping gear needs to be carried on packhorses – you will use your saddle and sheepskin as the gauchos do. 70FOR RESERVATIONS CALL US ON0845 130 6981 This ride combines fabulous beach riding along the Pacific coast with the high Andean mountains, forests and lagoons. You will follow in the footsteps of the Spanish conquistadors, who arrived in Chile in 1512, along the only route the Mapuche Indians permitted the Spanish to travel. It is a route rich in historical significance, where important battles were waged. Today this territory continues to be Chile's stronghold of Mapuche culture and customs. Your guide is Rodolfo Coombs, who owns Huepil- Malal where the ride finishes. Rodolfo is an internationally recognised rider, who for many years trained and selected the horses for the Spanish Olympic equestrian team. The horses used are direct descendents of the horses of the Spanish conquistadors - muscular, strong, fast and agile, with unique breed traits that are well defined. They combine a balance between their aptitudes as a saddle and stock horse. The tour starts with a night in Temuco before travelling by car to the coastal village of Lobería to join the horses. From here you ride along miles of deserted beaches, ideal for galloping, to Porma. The horses are then transported inland to Huepil- Malal in the high Andes, where the next two days are spent exploring the mountains. Accommodation for your first night in Temuco will be at a Holiday Inn Express Hotel ( or similar). During your costal ride the nights are spent under canvas in simple twin tents. The final three nights are spent at Huepil- Malal, in a purpose built wooden chalet with commanding views of the mountains.
