104FUNZIKEYS, FUNZIISLANDOn the southern tip of Funzi Island, Funzi Keysfaces onto a small sandy beach and is one of themost exclusive hideaways on the coast. Therooms are very private and have four-posterbeds, fine linen and a Jacuzzi. A 50 metre pool isset amongst the mangroves and surrounded bysunloungers and beanbags, the ideal spot to relaxduring a hot afternoon. The owner Alessandroprides himself on the cuisine which includeseverything from Swahili dishes to sushi. There arelots of activities on offer including snorkelling, sailing and trips to sandbanks for picnic lunches.Funzi IslandFunzi is an unspoilt island at the tip of Kenya'ssouth coast. Though only a 15 minute flight fromMombasa it may as well be in another world.Arriving by air you see turquoise waters, slivers ofwhite sand and dense tropical vegetation. Dhowssail on the waves and underneath the surface, amarine park harbours numerous coral reefs. Onceon the ground, a grass runway has small pathswinding into the trees. A wooden walkway leadsonto the island, for there are no roads here. Withone exclusive lodge and no neighbours for milesaround, this is as remote a beach destination asyou'll find anywhere.Diani Beach, Kenya CoastDiani Beach is a popular beach on Kenya's southcoast. It has a long stretch of white sand fringedby palms and other indigenous bush. Althoughthere are a number of hotels, private homes, shops and restaurants here, most of them arelow-rise and set in large properties with gardensand trees. There is still a nice sense of nature, the atmosphere is relaxed so you can walk alongthe sand without meeting too many people.ASHACOTTAGE, DIANIBEACHAsha Cottage is a pretty family-run guesthouse.John and Dominique have five rooms with white-washed walls, tiled floors and traditionalSwahili furniture. The rooms look out onto thepool, set in tropical gardens. Cuisine is excellentwith chef Kennedy deciding on the menu onlyonce he knows what the day's catch is. With arelaxed atmosphere, this property is particularlywell suited to families. The pool at Funzi KeysView from a Funzi Keys chaletFunzi KeysAsha CottageDiani Beach

We feel thatthis limits which camps you can reach and as roads are pot-holed, journeys can be long anduncomfortable. There also tend to be stops atstrategically placed curio shops. We prefer to flyour travellers around the country making use ofthe extensive and reasonably priced flight network.Flights land at small airstrips in the heart of parkswhere we will have your guide waiting, ready todrive you to camp. The flight network extends tothe coast with regular flights to Lamu, Diani Beachand Funzi Island. As flying is much quicker thandriving, the focus of your holiday will be on gameviewing, meeting local communities and relaxing, rather than on travelling. When to go??The best time to travel.?A good time to travel, but there may be some factors to be aware of.~Travel is possible, but this is not the best time of year.?Travel is not recommended.Kenya is a dry country with 75% of its area classedas arid or semi-arid. The climate can be dividedinto two belts. 'Inland' Kenya (including the RiftValley and Central Highlands) has an idyllic climatewith daytime temperatures averaging 20C andcooler nights. The short rains fall from October toDecember and the long rains from March to May.The coastal strip is hot and humid all year round, with daytime temperatures ranging from 26C to32C and 70% humidity. However, the heat ispleasantly tempered by the monsoon winds. Due to its temperate climate, Kenya can beenjoyed nearly all year round, the only period toavoid being the long rains from the middle ofMarch to the end of May.Time difference:GMT+3 hoursFlight time from UK:8.5 hoursPricesWe offer trips to cater for a wide range ofbudgets.
