FOR CITIES & LANDSCAPESElisa Scannell (USA) and Mike Ward (Canada)Overview: Take in Canada's lake-studded Eastern Townships, and vibrant Montréal and Québec as well as the thundering Niagara Falls and New York's Finger Lakes region.Elisa: A er a few days in the vibrant ci of Boston there's nothing be er than hiring a car to escape to New Hampshire's nearby White Mountains, breathe in pure mountain air and look for moose. Driving north, you cross the border om New Hampshire into the Canadian province of Québec and encounter the a uent lake-studded region known as the Eastern Townships. Mike: Québec Ci lies a couple of hours' drive further north. e ci evokes reminders of the 1759 Ba le of Québec, which changed the history of North America forever. Nothing is nicer than ambling through the cobbled s eets, exploring the many excellent art galleries and pavement cafés. One of my favourite restaurants is Le Lapin Sauté in the Pe t Champlain dis ict, where you can watch s eet entertainers while enjoying the delicious grills and gra ns. Your route then follows the migh St Lawrence River south to Mon éal, the second-largest French-speaking ci in the world. Con nuing your journey south, cross into the province of Ontario for a stay in Canada's largest ci , Toronto. e ci 's excellent thea es, shopping and ethnic neighbourhoods are a joy to discover. Skir ng Lake Ontario, drive through the vineyards of the Niagara Escarpment to Niagara Falls. Our favourite ways to see the falls are on board the Maid of the Mist boat or by taking a helicopter ight. Elisa: From Niagara, cross back into the USA and, driving past Bu alo, arrive in New York State's pre Finger Lakes region (above), maybe enjoying a few of the excellent local wines. It is then a scenic full-day drive through up-state New York to the great ci itself. I never re of driving the breathtaking Ice elds Parkway (below) between Jasper and Ban , which weaves between glacier-s ewn mountains and iridescent blue lakes such as gli ering Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. Dave: From Ban it is just a two-hour drive to the cowboy ci of Calgary. From here, head south and cross the border back into the USA to admire the mountain scenery in Montana's Glacier Na onal Park. Travelling west, head through the remote regions of northern Idaho and eastern Washington to the beau ful North Cascades Na onal Park where there are more monumental mountains to marvel at.
